MLB in Review

Yesterday's MLB action was packed with excitement. From a "brawl", for lack of better word, and many trade deadline stars helping there teams score runs. Xavier Nady had one of his best games ever going 4-5, with 6 runs batted in. Manny on the other hand also went 4-5, with a homer and 3 batted in. This helped the Dodgers climb within one game of the D-Backs in the NL West race. Highlights from some of the top games;

American League:

Angels 9 Yankees 14 -
This was a nationally televised game on TBS as both teams took it to the offense. The back and forth game included Nady's 6 RBI's and a Mark Texiera grand slam.

Oakland 2 Boston 5 - Boston kept pace with NY's win by helping Dice-K to his 12th win. Papelbon picked up his 31st save. Jason Bay, another deadline deal, helped the cause by going 2-4 with 2 runs scored.

Detroit 5 Tampa Bay 6 - Tampa Bay won this game by scoring two in the 10th to counter the 1 scored by the Tigers. Cabrera and Granderson hit homers for the Tigers, and BJ Upton tried to break his slump by going 2-4 with 2 runs batted in.

Indians 2 Twins 6 - Francisco Lirianos return to the bigs was very successful. He pitched 6 innings of 3 hit ball and his slider had the bite it needed on the righties. Denard Spahn was 2-4 with 2 of the Twins runs scored.

National League:

Mets 0 Astros 4 - The Mets trying to not fall from the NL East picture blew a series against the Twins. A day after Maine went on the DL, Perez allows four including a Ty Wigginton home run causing the Mets to fall to 3 back in the NL East.

Pirates 5 Cubs 8 - Cubs continue there hot streak towards the best record in the NL and expanded there lead in the Central over Milwaukee and Cards losses. Marmol got another save in Wood's absence, and A Ram and Soriano each had homers.

D-Backs 5 Dodgers 6 - Doug Davis recieved his 6th loss of the season for the D-Backs as Manny and Matt Kemp homered in the winning cause. Dodgers closed the NL West race as they are only 1 game back now.

Phillies 5 Cardinals 4 - The ESPN Sunday Night Game proved to be nothing less of exiciting. Phils had the chance to see the Mets and Marlins lose and knew they could pick up ground in the East. Shane Victorino hit a 3 run homer to give the Phils the lead, and Brad Lidge earned a scary looking save. Ryan Ludwick continued his hot streak with another home run.

Player of the day - Xavier Nady, 4-5, 6 RBI, 1R
Pitcher of the day - Francisco Liriano, 6ip, 3 hits, 3BB, 5 K, his first game back in the majors since April.

McDougle's Last Stand

Arguably one of the biggest busted draft picks in Eagles history could go down as Jerome McDougle. He was drafted in 2003 as the 15th overall pick out of Miami. This guy has been given more second chances than anyone can imagine. The Eagles are bringing McDougle into camp this year and giving him what is probably his final shot at making the squad. The defensive end position is very deep this season for the birds, and McDougle's careless decisions in the past have not helped his cause in gaining a roster spot.
Reports out of Lehigh have shown McDougle is making progress. He is working with the second team defense and is faring very well against the first team.
"He's stepped up," head coach Andy Reid said last week. "He looks strong and fast and quick. I think he's playing very good right now. We want him to maintain that. And, he's going against the [first-team offense]. It's a good gauge of what he's all about right now and it looks like he's doing OK."

About this blog

This blog is dedicated to the rise, and mainly fall of Philadelphia sports. Philadelphia fans are usually known as some of the most hardheaded and arrogant sports fans in the world. These fans will live and die by their team no matter what the situation. The curse of Billy Penn began in 1987. Before 1987 no building in the city of Philadelphia was supposed to be built higher than the statue of Penn atop Philly's City Hall. In March of '87, the One Liberty Place skyscraper was built, and it exceeded the height of Penn's Statue. Since then no Major Philly sports team has won a championship.

The Curse of William Penn is an alleged curse, sometimes used to explain the failure of professional sports teams based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to win championships since the March 1987 construction of the One Liberty Place skyscraper, which exceeded the height of William Penn's statue atop Philadelphia City Hall. Since then, no Philadelphia major sports team (baseball, football, basketball, or hockey) has won a league championship. The last professional team to win a championship in the four major sports was the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1983 NBA Finals, when they swept the Los Angeles Lakers in four games.
